Somali troops, aided by Ethiopia, displace Islamic rebels in capital
By MAHAD AHMED ELMI and JONATHAN S. LAY
MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS
12/29/2006
MOGADISHU, Somalia - Government troops and allied forces from neighboring Ethiopia swept into Mogadishu on Thursday without firing a shot after Islamic militants abandoned Somalia's capital.

Once considered unbeatable, the Council of Islamic Courts was left holding only a small pocket of territory around the southern port city of Kismayo. Only days earlier, the militants had controlled much of Somalia.

But the routing of the loose alliance of Islamic militants after only a week of fighting did not mean an end to the years of war and suffering that have racked the impoverished country of 9 million in the Horn of Africa.

There were grave fears that hard-core Somali Islamists, bolstered by foreign radicals, would fight a guerrilla insurgency against Somalia's Western-backed interim federal government and its protectors from Ethiopia, a country with a population divided between Christians and Muslims.

Moreover, even as Somali government and Ethiopian troops moved into Mogadishu, gunmen from rival clans that had fought over the city for years before the Islamists drove them out began reappearing in the streets.

The Council of Islamic Courts overran much of Somalia after seizing Mogadishu in July from clan militias that the United States had funded secretly. Many Somalis welcomed the militants because they ended years of lawlessness, even though they employed harsh Islamic punishments.

Ethiopia, which has one of Africa's strongest militaries, intervened last week at the request of the transitional federal government, a U.N.-recognized alliance of clan and political strongmen that the Islamists had penned up in the town of Baidoa.

The Bush administration, which has accused the Council of Islamic Courts of being in league with al-Qaida, gave tacit approval to Ethiopia's intervention.

Somali troops backed by Ethiopian ground forces and fighter jets advanced rapidly out of Baidoa, overrunning many areas without fights. Lightly armed Council of Islamic Courts fighters withdrew in headlong flight, although their leaders called it a tactical retreat.

Government and Ethiopian forces entered Mogadishu unopposed Thursday afternoon from the north, while a second column moving from the south halted short of the city's boundaries.

Ethiopia had said its troops wouldn't move into Mogadishu. It apparently changed its mind after Council of Islamic Courts leaders and fighters fled the city southward toward Kismayo.

In the power vacuum, shots echoed around the city, and gunmen robbed shops and held up civilians. Looters stripped offices that militants had abandoned. At least three civilians were reported killed and more than 10 injured.

"We will not let Mogadishu burn," Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said in Addis Ababa.

Some residents welcomed the government and Ethiopian forces as they moved through the blighted streets to the Hotel Ramadan, which the Islamists had used as their headquarters.

The Ethiopian prime minister said he hoped the Islamists could be crushed and the conflict concluded "in days, if not in a few weeks."

Most Somalis regard Ethiopia, which has fought two wars with Somalia in the last 45 years and has refused to relinquish its ethnic Somali-dominated Ogaden region, as their deadliest foe.

THE ORIGIN OF AMERICAN CHRISTMAS MYTH AND CUSTOMS

( B. K. Swartz, Jr.)
Fundamentally Christmas celebration is based on the intertwining of two ethnic patterns, Roman transition rites and Germano-Celtic Yule (jiuleis) rites-feasting and mortuary practice. First known use of the word Christes-Maess was in England, 1038. The English titled Feast Days with Mass Days. No Saint's day listed for December 25th. Abbreviation Xmas; X is Greek Chi, the first letters of Christmas--not X blank out.

In colonial New England Thanksgiving, not Christmas, was the important seasonal holiday. Puritans passed an anti-Christmas law in 1659, repealed 1681. Christmas celebration was resisted by the Congregationalist Cotton Mather (1663-1728). First recorded post-repeal celebration was in 1686. Christmas was declared a holiday in Louisiana, 1837. Christmas was unimportant in the United States until 1880's when the church relented. In 1885 a law was enacted giving federal employees Christmas day off. Christmas declared a legal holiday in U.S. late (1894 or in this century). Get the whole story

Ethiopia Trip

I am going with 3 others - Claire Kirk and Catherine Leeson from CAFOD and Paul Gill, who, like me is a volunteer.
I have many questions that I hope the trip will help answer:
Why do we not seem to be able to crack the root causes of the problems that cause poverty in Countries like Ethiopia?
How can Tigray provence improve it's farming output?
Does the FairTrade system really help Ethiopia's farms and industries- particularly the coffee growers?
What is Ethiopia's debt and what needs to be done to reduce it?
Why is there seemingly futile strife between Ethiopia and its neighbours? This is particularly interesting to me as I am a supporter of projects to help improve life for people in Eritrea.click to enter Ethiopia Trip

When I was home de

Sunshine seemed like gold.
Since I come up North de
Whole damn world's turned cold.

I was a good boy,
Never done no wrong.
Yes, I was a good boy,
Never done no wrong,
But this world is weary
An' de road is hard an' long.

I fell in love with
A gal I thought was kind.
Fell in love with
A gal I thought was kind.
She made me lose ma money
An' almost lose ma mind.

Weary, weary,
Weary early in de morn.
Weary, weary,
Early, early in de morn.
I's so weary
I wish I'd never been born.

Flower Farm Is My Heart

Your grin,
the warm glowing sunshine,
Raindrops are your magical

Flower farm is my heart and is
Rendezvous for

What a sight,
Plenty of flowers are planted
inside me,

Roses of every kind
Red mixed with white,
you should come

I wanna take you on a tour ,
And love to walk you
in this place,

For
Something is telling to me that
Your heart is a unique

The last Pharaon & the first Roman Emperor

The last Pharaon of Egypt and the dashing Roman general
One of the most famous women in history, Cleopatra VII was the brilliant and beautiful last Pharaoh of Egypt. Although she is often portrayed as a femme fatale, Cleopatra was deeply religious and studied to be a nun. An accomplished mathematician and gifted linguist fluent in nine languages, Cleopatra was also skilled politician popular with her people.

She married her younger brother, Ptolemy, and she became the mistress of the Roman general Julius Caesar. Following Caesar's death, Roman general Marc Antony went to Egypt to advance the growing power of Rome. Cleopatra captivated Antony. Their affair scandalized Roman society and bothered Roman politicians, who were suspicious of Egypt's power.

Yet despite the risks, Antony and Cleopatra married in 36 B.C. The couple planned to conquer Rome. But in 31 B.C. the Roman general Octavian destroyed the combined forces of Antony and Cleopatra in the battle of Actium. Hearing a false report that Cleopatra was dead, Antony fell on his sword. With no hope left, Cleopatra induced a poisonous asp to bite her.

Four thousand years of glorious Pharaonic rule was finally finished. Egypt became a Roman province. Octavian (later Augustus) became the first Roman Emperor, launching a new era in history.

Annan Fetta?

'Annan Fetta?'
Amargna
With that her full moon-smile,
asked me
'annan fetta?' but,

At that moment, I did not know,
'got milk?' has been
what she really meant.

If did I understand the meaning then,
could've lit up my teeth &
replied, " cheese it."

And of course, " please" I'd say
"give me milk & millk is you,
that's it
that's all
what I want."

In the place where i came from:

roof-corrugated iron is being
knocking constantly with snow balls
And makes a noise ta ta ta ta ta.......

If a bald head man,
Taking a walk while it's snowing
tiny snow balls bounce up & down
all over his head
And makes a noise ta ta ta ta ta ta......

Winter time is the time for fresh corn

yes, of course
it makes a ta ta ta ta....'s noise
