Noah Samara

Mentalacrobatics » TEDGlobal - The X Files Says:
June 25th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
".........A Radio!

You may have heard that due to the generosity of the Google and AMD each of the TED Global Fellows will soon be getting a new Mac or PC laptop. What you may not have heard is that due to generosity of Noah Samara from Worldspace each fellow is also getting a satellite radio and an annual Worldspace subscription. As you can imagine we went, as a famous Kenyan blogger would put it, bananas. But I quickly realised I was going bananas for a different reason from everyone else. All the other fellows are going nuts over the Macs (is anyone seriously choosing a PC?) But me, I was going bananas over the radio.
Walalala.
Satellite radio, for one year. Yani I can wake up at 3am and tune into what the good people of Papua New Guinea are up to? And I’ve always wondered what the theme music for radio news in Peru sounds like. Now I’ll know. On News Year Eve I’ll start listening from Time Zone 1 and check out how each time zone celebrates the New Year! Imagine how many countdowns I will catch! Yeah ok, Macs are cool, very very cool. Lakini, you guy, a radio with a ka small satellite dish, come on now, what is cooler than that! Seriously!........."

General Stanley Mathenge

After I have read this article, attempted to get the very detail life story of this Ethiopian guy. And I'll be back with those findings in Amharic. Happy Ethiopian millennium to you all.

The Mau Mau staged a rebellion against British colonial rule
A leading Kenyan independence fighter - General Stanley Mathenge - has returned to Kenya for the first time in 47 years to attend celebrations marking 40 years of independence.
General Mathenge, 84, returned at the invitation of President Mwai Kibaki to attend Sunday's ceremonies.

He was a commander in the Mau Mau independence movement, but he fled Kenya in 1956 after the nominal leader of the movement, Dedan Kimathi, was captured and executed by the British colonial power.

He was a brave, courageous, fearless and partly ruthless commander

Kamau wa Kihote

More than 13,000 Africans were killed in the Mau Mau rebellion in the 1950s as well as about 100 Europeans.

"I am so delighted to be back home. I thank Kenyans for their ungrudging hospitality," he told a crowd of about 300 people in the airport lounge.

He spoke in Amharic, the only language he speaks, which was translated into English by Ethiopian ambassador to Kenya Muradi Mussa.

Mr Mathenge had the rank of general bestowed on him after he returned from service in Burma in the second world war.

Call for support

"He was a brave, courageous, fearless and partly ruthless commander," said Kamau wa Kihote, 81, who fought alongside General Mathenge in Mount Kenya and the Aberdares forests in central Kenya, reports AFP news agency.

"Mathenge, I swear, used to punish us for a good cause, if we failed to take his commands in the bush," said another former veteran, Francis Muruiki, 80.

He added that the general's war tactics led the British army to start bombarding the Mau Mau in the forests.

"The local fighters dodged the bombs for weeks, but when the food supplies dried up, our lifeline was cut off, each of us fled on our own. Many died in the forest and were consumed by wild animals."

General Mathenge and 28 other fighters fled to Ethiopia, with the hope of getting support there, but they never returned.

A Must-Read Article........Sankofa.....Adwa.....

'Sankofa' director back with film of Ethiopian battle
By Mary Gabriel
WASHINGTON, Nov. 25 (Reuters) - With the 1994 picture ``Sankofa,'' Ethiopian director Haile Gerima became something of a legend in the independent film world.
His haunting story of an African American woman's time travel back to the days of slave trading was rejected by Hollywood, which said it did not know how to market it. But Gerima did. He simply let the movie speak for itself.

Inventing his own telecom.......(..interview language --> Amharic)

This interview reminds me the story of DOS & people around with that program. God knows how many billions of users around the world are dependent on that MS-DOS today. But, before Dos got its popularity" Bill Gates contacted Tim Patterson of Seattle Computer Products and purchased a copy of his 86-DOS (previously QDOS - Quick and Dirty Operating System) for $50,000."
I hope the Ethiopian telecoms would keep the intellectual right of this young man, Israel & work with him.

Colonel Abdissa Aga was born in Welega. His

brother when Abdissa was about 12 years old.
Though he went as far as Addis Ababa to
appeal for the release of his father, he was
executed. Sad and embittered, he joined the
Ethiopian Army around the age of 14 and
